Breast cancer is a major cause of suffering and death and is of significant concern to many women. Early detection of breast cancer by systematic mammography screening can find lesions for which treatment is more effective and generally more favourable for quality of life. The potential harm caused by mammography includes the creation of unnecessary anxiety and morbidity, inappropriate economic cost and the use of ionising radiation. It is for this reason that the strongest possible emphasis on quality control and quality assurance is required. Development of the European Guidelines for Quality Assurance in Breast Cancer Screening and Diagnosis has been an initiative within the Europe Against Cancer Programme. The fourth edition of the multidisciplinary guidelines was published in 2006 and comprises ∼400 pages divided into 12 chapters prepared by >200 authors and contributors. The multidisciplinary editorial board has prepared a summary document to provide an overview of the fundamental points and principles that should support any quality screening or diagnostic service. This document includes a summary table of key performance indicators and is presented here in order to make these principles and standards known to a wider scientific community.

A manual for provider-initiated medical examination, testing and counselling.
Infectious diseases are among the most serious health consequences of injecting drug use and can lead to significant healthcare costs. Injecting drug users are vulnerable to a range of infectious and communicable diseases through a variety of risk behaviours, and because of underlying
conditions such as poor hygiene, homelessness and poverty.
There is a recognised need for guidance on providing IDUs with a medical examination and testing for HIV, viral hepatitis and several other infections on a regular basis. In addition, improving testing uptake in this group would benefit epidemiological surveillance and monitoring as carried out at the national and international level.
These guidelines are accompanied by a recommended package of prevention and primary care in relation to injecting drug users and infections. Treatment and other specialist care are not discussed in detail but are dealt with by indicating referral to appropriate services.

Pour relever le défi toujours plus menaçant que représente l’épidémie d’obésité pour la santé, les économies nationales et le développement, la charte européenne sur la lutte contre l’obésité a été adoptée lors de la Conférence ministérielle européenne de l'OMS sur la lutte contre l’obésité, Istanbul (Turquie), 16 novembre 2006.
Le processus d’élaboration de cette Charte a fait intervenir, par le biais d’un dialogue et de consultations, différents secteurs ministériels, organismes internationaux, experts, membres du secteur associatif et acteurs du monde économique.

This Manual is a joint production by the EMCDDA and the Prevention Standards Partnership, and presents and describes basic and expert level quality standards for drug prevention. The standards cover all aspects of drug prevention work, including needs and resource assessment, programme planning, intervention design, resource management, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, dissemination, sustainability, stakeholder involvement, staff development, and ethics. Considerations regarding the standards’ real-life implementation are provided, acknowledging differences in professional culture, policy, and the structure of prevention delivery within Europe.

La Charte de Tallinn a été ratifiée en 2008 par les 53 pays qui constituent la région européenne de l’Organisation Mondiale de la Santé (OMS). Partant du constat que, dans tous les pays, des groupes n’ont pas accès à des soins de santé de qualité, la charte pointe la nécessité de systèmes de santé solides.

Ce document reprend très clairement les 14 droits des patients de la Charte européenne des droits des patients.

La première Conférence internationale pour la promotion de la santé, réunie à Ottawa a adopté le 21 novembre 1986 la présente « charte » en vue de contribuer à la réalisation de l’objectif de la santé pour tous d’ici à l’an 2000 et au-delà.
